What is Project Lifesaver?

The Project Lifesaver program combines radio technology with a coordinated police response to locate wandering and disoriented persons due to Alzheimer's Disease, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Acquired Brain Disorder, or other conditions or disorders.

How does Project Lifesaver work?

Project Lifesaver participants must be registered with the Barrie Police Service's Vulnerable Person's Registry. The participant wears a wristband that emits a tracking signal. The watch-sized bracelet is a one-ounce, battery-operated transmitter that emits an FM radio frequency signal every second, 24 hours a day. These products are supplied directly by Project Lifesaver Simcoe.

When caregivers notify Barrie Police Service their loved one is missing, police will respond to the area where the person was last seen and utilizes a specialized mobile-location tracking system.

Who is eligible for Project Lifesaver?

In order to be eligible for the program, the participant must:

  • Be registered with the Barrie Police Vulnerable Persons Registry
  • Be living with a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer's, dementia, autism, or another condition that may place them at risk of wandering
  • Reside with a caregiver or in the non-secure section of a facility
  • Reside in the City of Barrie

What is the cost?

The transmitter, bracelets and batteries are $500 for one year. After the first year, batteries, bracelets and administration fees are $120 annually or $10 per month.
