Occurrence Type: Collaboration and Teamwork Leads to Break and Enter Arrest
Occurrence #: BA18037947 & BA18037973
Date: Tuesday, July 31, 2018 - 3:00pm

On Tuesday, July 31st, 2018 at 3:00 pm officers were called to a residence on Duval Drive, in the City of Barrie, after the home owner returned home to find an unknown male in her house. The suspect immediately fled through the back door and was last seen hopping fences towards Hanmer Street East. Multiple Barrie Police units, including Uniform Patrol, Criminal Investigative Division and the K9 Unit attended the area and immediately began tracking the suspect. Numerous items linked to the break and enter was located to the east of the Georgian Mall as the track continued towards Bayfield Street.

While the track brought officers to a crowded Bayfield Street, the Street Crime Unit became involved as detectives had been working with South Simcoe Police Service on gathering information on a repeat break and enter suspect. With this information, witness descriptors and a keen eye from detectives in the area, the male suspect was located on the west side of Bayfield Street and arrested with multiple items of jewelry still in his possession. Within minutes of the arrest, a second call came in for a residence on Hanmer Street East that had also been ransacked with valuables taken.  Many of the items located along the track and in the suspect’s possession were also connected to this break and enter.

The 36-year-old Bradford man has been charged with:

  • Break and Enter x 2
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime x 2
  • Breach Probation

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of both police services, as well as the teamwork within the Barrie Police organization, this suspect was promptly arrested and valuables returned to the rightful owners.

Barrie Police Service would like to remind residents of a few simple steps that can be taken to secure your residence and aid police in returning recovered property in the case you fall victim to a break and enter:

  1. Ensure all doors and windows are closed and locked when leaving the house.  Often times criminals enter through unlocked doors or open windows, especially those at ground level.
  2. Ensure your home has clear sightlines from the street by keeping bushes pruned and clutter clear from the sides and rear of your residence.
  3. Keep a file with serial numbers of electronics and photographs of jewelry and valuables somewhere safe to aid in returning recovered property and help support a charge and conviction when suspects are arrested.
