Occurrence Type: Special Investigations Unit Mandate Invoked in Investigation at BPS
Occurrence #: 18-OCD-186
Date: Friday, June 22, 2018 - 2:30pm

On Friday, June 22nd, 2018 at approximately 2:30 pm Barrie Police Service (BPS) arrested a 32-year-old male. He was transported to BPS where during booking he went into medical distress. He was immediately transported to Royal Victoria Regional Health Center by County of Simcoe Paramedics where, a short time later, he was pronounced deceased.

The Barrie Police Service has notified the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has invoked its mandate. As a result, BPS will not be able to provide any further information. Any inquiries should be directed to SIU at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
