Occurrence Type: Vacuum Theft Leads to Discovery of Stolen Vehice
Occurrence #: BA18016464
Date: Monday, April 9, 2018 - 12:15pm

On Monday April 9, 2018, at approximately 12:15 p.m. two males had entered a business on Caplan Drive, in the City of Barrie. While inside the store one male grabbed a Dyson vacuum and walked out while the second male stood as a lookout.

An employee had observed what had occurred and followed the males into the parking lot, observed them get into a black Mercedes Bens and leave the area. The employee continued to follow the males in his vehicle and called 911.

The males were followed to the area of Hwy 400 and Dunlop Street, West, at which time they were observed by police. It was quickly ascertained the vehicle being followed had been reported stolen to police on Sunday. A traffic stop was attempted, although the driver failed to stop for police and fled east on Dunlop Street, pulling into a commercial plaza parking lot. Police attempted to block in the stolen vehicle, but the driver stuck the cruiser and managed to escape. The vehicle then fled on Dunlop Street West and was observed heading into the Wellington Plaza.

As a result of driving erratically a tire became deflated and the two men quickly abandoned the vehicle in the Wellington Plaza parking lot and fled the area on foot. Police located one male running towards Hwy 400 and arrested him behind a local bakery. The second male was located and arrested by police inside Value Village.

The driver, a 37-year-old male from Winnipeg, has been charged with; Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Theft Under $5,000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 and Over $5,000, Possession of a Stolen Credit Card, six counts of Use Stolen Credit Card, six counts of Fraud and two counts of Fail to Comply with Probation. The 37-year-old was held for a bail hearing and later released. He will re-appear in a Barrie Court of Justice on April 30, 2018
