Identity Theft Attempt
November 6th, 2017 - Police & the Community

The Barrie Police are seeking the public’s assistance to identify a suspect following an attempt fraud on Sunday, October 29, 2017. Police were called to a Jewelry store in the Georgian Mall, located at 501 Bayfield Street, in the City of Barrie, after a suspect had applied for an in-store credit card using a false identity.

The suspect had advised the store employee he had been looking at purchasing a watch with a budget of $800.00. When provided the opportunity to apply for an in-store credit card the suspect’s excessive purchasing behaviour became suspicious. He requested to purchase two watches instead of one, which valued just shy of $5,000.

Prior to finalizing the credit card application the suspect provided an Ontario Drivers Licence, which was closely examined by the employee. It was quickly determined the drivers licence was fake and numerous features of a valid drivers licence were not present.  The employee advised the suspect his driver’s licence was fraudulent and voided the application.  The suspect then quickly lunged over the counter and grabbed the licence from the employee, and fled the store running.

Further investigation by police found the drivers licence and information contained to be fictitious. The investigation is ongoing.
