Six Months Following the Disappearance of Mandy Thompson Investigators Continue to Seek Further Leads

On Friday, February 3, 2017, just after 7:30 a.m., 72-year-old Mandy Thompson went missing from her residence on Laidlaw Drive, in the City of Barrie. An extensive search throughout the city was initiated and with the assistance of Barrie Fire Kempenfelt Bay and surrounding areas were searched.

On Monday, February 6, 2017, a tip was received which provided Investigators with video surveillance that captured Mandy walking north-bound on Penetanguishene Road. With the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police and Georgian Bay Volunteer Search & Rescue ground and aerial searches continued throughout the week, encompassing the north-east end of Barrie and into Oro-Medonte Township.

On Friday, February 10, approximately 200 vehicles were canvased along Penetanguishene Road between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in efforts to obtain any further information on Mandy. Following an organized seven-day ground and air search, the search took a different direction and assigned Investigators continued to follow up with further leads.

On Tuesday, February 28, through to Wednesday, March 1, and once again on Monday, April 18, 2017, Barrie Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police and Georgian Bay Volunteer Search & Rescue took advantage of the mild weather, which produced favorable search conditions, and resumed ground and air searches. Search teams covered previously searched areas east of Penetanguishene Road into Oro-Medonte Township and north of Highway 11.

The investigation into her disappearance is ongoing and continues to be treated as a missing person’s investigation.

Mandy is described as;

  • Medium build
  • Short red/brown hair
  • Brown eyes
  • Wearing a black knee length jacket, white sweater, jeans and white running shoes.

The Search for Missing Mandy Thompson Expands North of Highway 11
(Update) Monday, April, 18, 2017 - 5:15 p.m. 

The Barrie Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continued the search north of Highway 11 for 72-year-old Mandy Thompson.

Mandy went missing from her Barrie home on Friday, February 3, 2017 just before 7:30 a.m. The search expanded into Oro-Medonte Township after she was captured on video surveillance walking northbound on Penetanguishene Road at 10:00 a.m. the day she was reported missing.

Extensive searches east of Penetanguishene Road were conducted throughout the month of February, which included air and ground searches utilizing snowmobiles, K9 and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).  In March search teams from Barrie Police Service and OPP conducted a second search over a two-day period during a brief mild spell, utilizing all search resources including ATV’s.

On Tuesday, April, 18, 2017, temperatures made search efforts favorable. A search was commenced which expanded north of Highway 11. Several areas that had been ice and snow covered during the initial search were re-visited and thoroughly searched. At the time of Mandy’s disappearance she had the ability to travel a significant distance in a short period of time.

The mild weather has provided access to areas which had been previously inaccessible as a result of heavy snow and ice build-up. Police are requesting that anyone living in the areas previously search and north of Highway 11 to thoroughly check their properties including barns, sheds, vehicles, garages and any receptacles on their properties.

Further search efforts will now be commenced upon receiving any additional leads, utilizing the required resources. Police will Continue to Search for Clues into Mandy's Disappearance

Throughout the past two days police took advantage of the mild weather, which provided favorable search conditions for the Barrie Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police, in the search for Mandy Thompson.

The investigation into her disappearance is ongoing and continues to be treated as a missing person’s investigation. Police will resume any search efforts utilizing the required resources as new information becomes available. Assigned investigators with the Barrie Police Investigative Services Unit will continue to follow up with any further tips they receive.

Air and Ground Searches for Mandy Thompson Resume Wednesday

The search for Mandy Thompson will resume Wednesday morning throughout the Oro-Medonte Township area, east of Penetanguishene Road.  Search teams comprised of Canine, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle’s (drones) and the Ontario Provincial Police helicopter will continue to be utilized.

Mild weather conditions have resulted in rapid melting of ice and snow, leaving search efforts favorable. Investigators are requesting anyone living in the Oro-Medonte Township area east of Penetanguishene Road to thoroughly check their properties including barns, sheds, vehicles, garages and any receptacles on their properties.

The disappearance of Mandy Thompson has left investigators actively seeking any potential witnesses and additional leads that will assist in locating Mandy.

The Barrie Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be conducting air and ground searches, with the assistance of volunteers from Georgian Bay Search and Rescue, beginning Tuesday, February, 28. The mild weather conditions will assist search teams to cover previously searched areas east of Penetanguishene Road, into Oro-Medonte Township. 

Investigators believe that Mandy was last seen walking northbound on Penetanguishene Road on Friday, February 3, at approximately 10:00 a.m. Mandy had been wearing a black knee length jacket and white running shoes when she was reported missing. Investigators are requesting anyone living in the north-east end of Barrie and areas east of Penetanguishene Road to thoroughly check their properties including barns, sheds, vehicles, garages and any receptacles on their properties.

Following a Seven Day Search for Mandy Thompson Investigators Continue to Seek Further Leads

(Update) Friday, February 10, 2017 - 6:00 p.m.

On Friday, February 10, ground and aerial searches for Mandy Thompson continued with the combined resources of the Barrie Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police. Approximately 200 vehicles were canvased along Penetanguishene Road between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in efforts to obtain any further information on Mandy.

The investigation continues to be treated as a missing person’s investigation and following an organized seven day ground and air search, the search will now take a different direction. Assigned investigators with the Barrie Police Investigative Services Unit will continue to follow up with any further tips. Upon receiving any additional leads the Barrie Police will commence searches utilizing the required resources.

The Search For Mandy Thompson Continues Friday Morning

(Update) Thursday, February 9, 2017 - 5:40 p.m.

Today the Barrie Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police continued the search for Mandy Thompson in the northeast end of Barrie encompassing the areas of Oro-Medonte east of Penetanguishene Road.   

On Friday, February 10, search teams will resume their ground search and if weather permits aerial searches will commence. The driver of a black truck towing a vehicle on Penetanguishene Road, near Napoleon Home Comfort was captured on video surveillance on Friday, February 3, 10:59 a.m. Police are requesting the driver of that vehicle to contact Investigators as they could have information that may assist in locating Mandy.

Tips Continue to Assist Police in the Search for Mandy Thompson - The Search will Continue Thursday Morning.

The Barrie Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police will continue searching for Mandy Thompson Thursday morning. Investigators will be canvassing residential neighborhoods and businesses along Penetanguishene Road and throughout the northeast end of Barrie. Police Search and Rescue Teams will continue to further their search efforts into Oro-Medonte Township.

A woman believed to be Mandy was captured on video surveillance walking northbound on Penetanguishene Road on Friday, February 3, at 10:00 a.m. Mandy has the ability to travel a significant distance in a short period of time and police are requesting that anyone living in the area(s) being searched to thoroughly check their properties including barns, sheds, vehicles, garages and any receptacles on their properties.

Investigators have received new video surveillance of a black tow truck parked on Penetanguishene Road near Napoleon Home Comfort on Friday, February 3, 10:59 a.m. Investigators believe the tow truck had been hooking up a vehicle and are looking to speak with the driver in efforts to obtain any further information that may assist in locating Mandy.

  • 5'8
  • Medium build
  • Short red/brown hair

The investigation into the disappearance of Mandy Thompson is now being conducted as a joint investigation by the Barrie Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police.

The search will continue east of Penetanguishene Road and surrounding areas of Oro-Medonte Township. Police will be utilizing a helicopter, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle's(UAV),snowmobiles, Police Search and Rescue Teams and K9.

Mandy has the ability to travel significant distances in a short period of time. Police are requesting anyone who resides in the Oro-Medonte Township area east of Penetanguishene Road and surrounding areas to check their properties including barns, sheds, vehicles and garages for any possible sightings of Mandy.

A tip was received earlier today which extended search efforts into Oro-Medonte Township, east of Penetanguishene Road and Georgian Drive. Further investigation has provided police with video surveillance which resembles a woman believed to be Mandy Thompson walking northbound on Penetanguishene Road on Friday, February 3, at 10:00 a.m.

Mandy has the ability to travel significant distances in a short period of time. Police are requesting anyone who resides in the Oro-Medonte Township area east of Penetanguishene Road and surrounding areas to check their properties including barns, sheds, vehicles and garages for any possible sightings of Mandy.

An extensive search by Search and Rescue Teams continued throughout the night yielding negative results. The Search for Mandy Thompson will continue this morning and throughout the day with the assistance of Barrie Fire and Georgian Bay Search and Rescue - a trained and qualified organization.

Police have been asked by numerous residents how the community can assist. We are asking residents to check their backyards, sheds, vehicles and garages for any possible sightings of Mandy.

The Barrie Police is seeking the public's assistance in locating a 72-year-old woman. Mandy Thompson went missing from her residence on Laidlaw Drive, in the City of Barrie just before 7:30 a.m. this morning.

Police are concerned for her safety, and believe she is not dressed for the inclement  weather.

Mandy is described as;

  • 5'8
  • Medium build
  • Short red hair
  • Wearing a long black coat and white running shoes.
